malta: its meaning

Malta comes from the Greek word meaning place of honey or sweetness. In Acts 28, Malta is described as a refuge—a place of kindness and shelter. When the Lord opened the doors for Malta Midwifery, He planted a vision in our hearts: to create a homebirth haven. A safe and sacred space for growing families. A place of warmth, healing, and holiness. The name Malta reflects our deepest goals: to serve families with sweetness, to provide refuge, and to honor the sacred work of caring.

Scripture offers another powerful glimpse into the heart of this calling. In Exodus, God honors midwives who revere life, walk in obedience, and uphold the sacredness of birth. He blesses their faithfulness. At Malta Midwifery, we carry this legacy forward. We believe that birth is a profound and holy transition.

Our philosophy is simple: birth belongs to family. To mothers whose love physically manifests, and to fathers who safeguard. We believe birth unfolds best in the comfort and power of home, untouched. With the Midwifery Model of Care as our foundation, we provide holistic, individualized support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Every home is unique. We honor that uniqueness in every decision.

Honey is sweet, rich, and golden. It is a gift slowly and intentionally crafted. It warms, soothes, and heals. But honey is more than sweet. It is ancient medicine. It protects. It restores. Midwifery is much the same. It holds space for beauty and for brokenness, for joy and for pain. It recognizes that sometimes, birth and motherhood call not just for care, but for healing. Here, we honor both: the sweetness of new life and the sacred work of tending.

At Malta Midwifery, we are committed to helping families bring birth back home, back where it belongs. We are honored to serve Lubbock and its surrounding communities as natives of West Texas.

As a child, I have fond memories of peering through the large glass windows of the hospital nursery, captivated by the sight of swaddled newborns. Years later, I found myself behind those same windows, working as a registered nurse. After over eight years in the hospital system, I gained invaluable experience in postpartum care, the newborn nursery, and lactation support, learning alongside a dedicated team and from inspiring mentors.

After the birth of my son in 2020, I felt a deep calling to pursue relationship-centered care. I completed doula training and attended my first out-of-hospital birth, where I met my midwifery preceptor and was immediately drawn to the community birth setting.

In April 2021, I began my midwifery education at the National College of Midwifery, a MEAC-accredited program, while working in a high-volume practice where I attended over 300 births. Countless hours were spent holding my own children while juggling school assignments, prenatal visits, and learning how to catch babies. My education was enriched by a hands-on environment that nurtured my knowledge and confidence.

In the fall of 2023, I graduated, passed the NARM certifying exam, and received my Texas licensure, and have now supported over 150 births as a licensed midwife. Throughout my journey, Maya Angelou’s quote, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better,” served as my guiding principle.

Midwifery has become my vessel to prioritize mothers and babies, honoring their desires and experiences while safeguarding the normal process of pregnancy and birth.

Outside of birth work, I enjoy spending time with my three children, coffee dates, Target runs, and eating my husband’s cooking.

I am a final-phase student midwife proudly serving my hometown of Lubbock, TX. I’m passionate about supporting mothers and babies with care that is personalized, empowering, and evidence-based.

Continuity of care is at the heart of my practice. I love getting to know families in early pregnancy, building trust throughout the journey, and walking alongside them during the intimate moments of birth and postpartum. Every mother and baby deserve care that honors autonomy and feels deeply supportive.

As a wife and homebirth mother, I understand the importance of skilled, family-centered care. I’ve had the privilege of supporting a variety of birth experiences, including VBACs, twin, and breech deliveries. Under the guidance of my preceptor, Shiane, I continue to expand my knowledge and experience, bringing compassionate, high-quality midwifery care to my community.

Let’s stay home together!
